“The KNME Digital Road Show,” the station’s traveling exhibit explaining the broadcast industry’s conversion to digital technology, visited various cities in New Mexico to demonstrate the capabilities of DTV.

KNME presents WHERE THERE’S A WILL, THERE’S A WAY, a five part series about estate planning.

KNME expanded its educational outreach with 37 Ready to Learn workshops to help parents, teachers, and care providers assist children with learning and reading skills.

MASTERPIECE THEATRE season included new adaptations of Charles Dickens “Great Expectations” and Gustave Flaubert’s “Madame Bovary.”

KNME is the first New Mexico television station on the air with a digital signal.


STATELINE NEW MEXICO premieres

STATELINE NEW MEXICO premieres. It’s a live, monthly call-in show that gives the citizens of New Mexico an opportunity to ask questions of state lawmakers and other officials.

Ken Burns’ JAZZ. Debuts.

KNME acquires the equipment necessary to closecaption its local programs.

KNME crews crisscross the state videotaping ROUTE 66 IN NEW MEXICO.


APS School Matters with Dr. Brad Allison

“APS School Matters with Dr. Brad Allison” is a monthly series that discusses the issues faced by New Mexico’s largest school district. Many of the programs are live with viewers calling in their questions and comments.


2002


A drought awareness campaign was launched to keep citizens of New Mexico well informed about the drought and its impact on the people of New Mexico.

ANTIQUES ROADSHOW returns to Albuquerque. A marble statue of a lion from China’s Tang dynasty is appraised at over $400,000, the most valuable find of the season.

Luciano Pavarotti comes to Albuquerque for one of his last concerts in the U.S. This event at the Pit receives an overwhelming response from the community.


2003


KNME broadcast live coverage of Governor Bill Richardson’s first State of the State address.

KNME becomes a partnership between law enforcement and the broadcast media in the nation wide Amber Alert, viewers are among the first to hear important information about child abductors in New Mexico.

KNME premieres the NOTABLE NEW MEXICAN series. The programs, produced in conjunction with he Albuquerque Museum Foundation, honors a “notable” New Mexican each year.


2004


KNME broadcasts “ BETWEEN THE LIONS” the only series on television aimed at teaching reading to children. The series was a recipient of a grant of $745,000 For the American Indian Head Start Literacy Initiative. Several pueblos in New Mexico agreed to participate.


KNME produces SONGS OF THE SPIRIT

KNME launches the first Science Crawl event. This event, a sponosored by KNME, the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science, Explora, The BioPark, The National Atomic Museum and APS, bring 6th graders to the museums. The purpose is to provide children with an opportunity to visit museums--some the students for the first time--to participate in hands-on projects and encourage interestin the sciences.

KNME produces SONGS OF THE SPIRIT in conjunction with the Native American Broadcast Consortium. The program features Guillermo Figueroa and the New Mexico Sympony Orchestra and Native American artists Joanne Shenandoah, R Carlos Nakai and Bill Miller.


2005


EARTHSHAKER is produced in conjunction with the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science.

KNME and local museums host six “Science Cafes”, a question and answer session given by local experts about topics from NOVAScienceNow. The purpose is to provide an open dialogue in a café style atmosphere.

KNME receives a grant from the Commerce Department’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration to fund the or. This grant will fund a portion of the stations digital translator providing enhanced television service.


KNME's VILLA DE ALBURQUERQUE

THE LINE debuts. The KNME production brings New Mexico political observers together to present and debate their perspectives on issues and events.

The KNME production VILLA DE ALBURQUERQUE celebrates the Duke City’s Tricentennial.

SLEEPING MONSTERS, SACRED FIRES: VOLCANOS OF NEW MEXICO is produced in conjunction with the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science.

PBS Kids premieres IT’S A BIG BIG WORLD.


2007


In January KNME begins a new era in local production with its first high definition production, THE WATER HAULERS.

A PLACE OF OUR OWN and its Spanish-language counterpart LOS NIÑO’S EN SU CASA premieres in February. The programs offer parents and caregivers tip on teaching and nurturing children.

Also in January, KNME partners with First Choice Women Infants and Children Clinics to offer 48 workshops on nutrition and health to low income families.


THE SANDIAS Debuts

The locally produced program THE SANDIAS debuts, showcasing the beautiful mountains East of Albuquerque.

Ken Burns’ “The War” premieres on KNME in September.

David Alire Garcia joins Gene Grant to host the reformatted news and public affairs series NEW MEXICO IN FOCUS.

The premiere of CURIOUS GEORGE, an animated television series based on the popular Curious George children's book.


2008


MASTERPIECE presents “The Complete Jane Austen” hosted by Gillian Anderson.

MUSICAL JOURNEY OF JOHN D. ROBB IN NEW MEXICO. Is KNME’s first production created with extensive web content.

    On May 1, KNME-TV signs on with a broadcast of UNM professor Edith Buchanan’s freshman English class. The station operates from a converted sorority house that later becomes the home of UNM’s Speech and Communications Department.
